CILA - The Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters

Liability SIG Newsletter no. 2

Dear Member,

Since our last newsletter we have been very busy. You have expressed an interest in becoming a member of the Liability SIG, but this group can only work with your support and help. Our philosophy is one of a members inclusive organisation, therefore please tell us what you want and participate and we can achieve our aims. The primary purpose of the SIG is as a medium for members, an educational and technical forum, help group and portal for us to show our considerable industry skill set and strengths in the field of liability.

We formed an Executive Committee back in August 2006 , to kick things off , and much work has been done behind the scenes. The willing volunteers comprise :-

  • Simon Burley – Examinations and Education
  • Tim Cramer-Todd – Chairman
  • Graeme Drysdale – Insurer representative
  • Colin Farley – Motor Liability
  • Martin Gabbitass
  • Chris Lewis
  • Martin Mathieson
  • Tony Wadey – Media and Web

We fully intend to hold formal elections in due course and of course you are all invited , nearer the time to put yourselves forward and vote, if you are a qualified member.

As we are an authorised part of CILA ,we have to have a Constitution, we are working on this and it will appear on our website soon.

Education

We have already held 2 educational seminars in London and Birmingham, and 2 more in association with the FOC, both were successful and fully subscribed, more are planned for this year in London and Manchester, and at some stage we hope to hold more and an AGM , perhaps in association with an educational theme.

Please let us know any topics that you would feel useful to be covered.

If you are interested in holding or participating in something, please let me know.

Website

This will be our global portal and primary means of communication. I hope that you have all had time to look at the new CILA site. The liability SIG has its own section and I would urge you all to submit articles, technical papers, interesting cases to populate it. It will only be as interesting as its content and the Committee cannot do this alone. Please submit any queries or articles to Tony Wadey (tony.wadey@argentadjusters.uk.com) or Rob Didcock at CILA (Rob.didcock@cila.co.uk). Tel : 0207337 9960.

There is also a discussion forum which I would urge all members to become involved with. Most topics are welcome (subject to certain legal rules), what do you think about the new Ogden tables, have you found a good surveillance or legal costs firm, difficult case etc., well why not air and share your views with others?

On a general level, we would urge anyone who attends a conference or seminar to post something on the site, for the benefit of others. We have already fielded technical enquiries from our members on various subject matters, and attended market events to promote the technical expertise of liability adjusters.

If you work with someone involved in liability work, please urge them to sign up. It’s simple, all they have to do is notify their interest to CILA (info@cila.co.uk) or telephone 020 7337 9960.

Sponsorship

We are hoping to have the website, and some key events, sponsored. In this regard, if you know of an insurer, broker, investigation company, lawyer etc who may be interested, or even your own organisation please let us know. There are a number of benefits including links to their website, logos appearing and preferential rates for events.
