Introduction to the Business Interruption SIG from the Chairman:
My vision for the BI SIG website has always been for it to be a technical resource, and for the construction of that technical resource to be the main focus of the committee.
To that end, I am delighted to advise that, recently, a number of technical notes have been placed on the website, several of which were launched as topics at the last CILA conference. Feedback following the initial presentations has been taken on board and the posted articles reflect the comments that have been received. The time taken from topic launch to the issue of a document on the website reflects the inclusive nature of discussions and debate.
More notes are in the course of preparation, notably one dealing with the overlap of Business Interruption and Material Damage cover in stock claims. That is a note that will be jointly issued with the Property SIG in due course.
If anybody has a view to any further technical notes that would assist, please let us know ā we can either pick the topic up and run with it or we can consider pre prepared submissions - draft technical notes are always welcome, subject to review and sign off by the committee.
Of course, the website is not the whole story. We have run Business Interruption seminars at two CILA conferences now, with a third approaching this autumn. We have also run a number of technical seminars with other groups, notably the LBIA, at regular intervals.
We are, at the time of writing this summary, finalising details for a technical BI wording seminar in the centre of London in early June, details of which will be announced very shortly.
So what else should the SIG be doing?
Training - Where does the responsibility for ongoing training fall between CILA and employer? Should we be offering a series of BI training modules, and if so, who should fund their delivery?
Books ā is there a need for a BI Claims book, and/or an introduction to the subject?
Iād be very happy to hear the views of any interested parties.
D Glynn
