CILA - The Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters

Meeting Wednesday 28 June 2006

As you are aware, it is the Institute’s intention to develop a series of Specialist Interest Groups to provide a focal point for issues relating to the specific area of interest of each group and to create centres of excellence.

You have indicated an interest in the Policyholder Representation SIG.

Under the arrangements agreed by Council, and approved at the recent AGM, each SIG is represented on Council. To this end, I have been asked to act as the Policyholder Representation SIG representative for the current year.

Council has set the following objectives for each SIG:

  • To provide a centre of excellence in the field of Chartered Loss Adjusting to enhance the reputation and standing of the Institute.
  • To represent the interests of those members who specialise in Policyholder Representation claims
  • To provide a focal point for issues relating to Policyholder Representation
  • To set and publish technical guidelines and recommendations (including technical bulletins) for the handling of Policyholder Representation claims.
  • To respond to technical enquiries referred to the SIG by the Institute’s Technical Committee
  • To liaise with and promote the Institute within related insurance and other groups on issues of common interest
  • To provide self funding seminars/training workshops and an annual conference, with these events taking place outside London, where possible.
  • To recommend minimum standards for the handling of Policyholder Representation claims within the context of regulation and the Institute’s Guide to Professional Conduct
  • To provide technical assistance as necessary to examiners and members of the Accreditation Panels

To achieve the objectives, each group is required to form a Steering Committee which will then establish a Management Committee during its first year. The Steering Committee will include a member of Council until the next AGM, when the Management Group will select their Council representative, the only criteria being that, to sit on Council, the person selected must be a qualified CILA member.

Of the 44 members who have responded, 29 are based in the regions covered by the Midlands, Western, Southern and London and Home Counties areas. Accordingly, in order to progress the Group, a meeting of interested members has been scheduled for 11am on Wednesday 28 June 2006 in the Birmingham area, with the venue to be determined once numbers attending are known. CILA will meet the costs of the venue, but not for food etc I envisage that we will have a sandwich lunch and it will be necessary for a per head charge to be made, details of which will follow when numbers and venue are known

Please confirm by email whether or not you are able to attend the meeting by Friday 16 June 2006, which will allow time to organise the venue. In addition, before the meeting, I would welcome suggestions of what you would like the SIG to achieve and how you consider these can be aided by the Institute.
