Guidance Notes

The Property SIG Committee has given consideration to the provision of Guidance Notes on various matters that give rise to disputes amongst adjusters. In this way it is hoped that the Guidance Note can provide a considered view as to how such matters should be addressed. In order to ensure that the guidance note is truly reflective of CILA members and represents best practice, it is proposed that the procedure for developing the Guidance Notes will include the following:-

  1. Issues
The issues will be set out clearly identifying the matter to which the Guidance Note will address itself.
  2. Tentative Proposals
The various different opinions associated with the matter under review will be put forward, to provide a balanced view on various aspects of the topic.
  3. Invite Response
It is intended to encourage Property SIG members as well as CILA members from other Specialist Interest Groups and Insurers to contribute to the debate, with every opportunity being provided for individuals to make direct representations to comment on the Guidance Note.
  4. Summary of Response
A summary, detailing the responses received and various views provided will be undertaken and the rationale for producing the Guidance Note will be clearly stated.
  5. Guidance Notes
The Guidance Note will then be issued and posted on the CILA Property SIG pages of the website within the publications section for future reference.

The guidance notes will be targeted at matters which by their very nature give rise to disagreements and those which give rise to different interpretations of similar facts by adjusters. In this way it is hoped that the insuring public receive a consistent and professional service from Insurers and their adjusters.

Two such topics have been highlighted and a further note will be issued shortly for your consideration. Should members wish to submit any matters/topics that would lend themselves to such a Guidance Note the committee would warmly welcome all suggestions for consideration.
