Potential G20 “Riot” Damage

In view of the protests that were held during the recent G20 meeting, claims handlers in London should familiarise themselves with the requirements of the Riot Damage Act. A recovery of insurer’s outlay can be pursued against the Police authority in such situations. Riot is defined as “when 12 or more people have gathered to use or threaten violence for a common purpose” (full definition within Public Order Act 1986).

Claims need to be lodged with the Police within 14 days. Claims forms to the Met Police, City of London and possibly the British Transport Police should be considered. Attached is a suitable form for this use.
