Cert CILA
The Cert CILA is an entry-level professional qualification for anyone in the claims industry.

Successful candidates will gain recognition from employers and colleagues and be able to use the designation Cert CILA after their name. The Certificate will also, if required, act as a stepping stone to the top-level Chartered or Certified qualification. This Certificate qualification is aimed at Claims Professionals and can be set apart from other qualifications as its aims, learning materials and learning outcomes are all based on the work that is undertaken by those handling claims. In other words if you work in claims this is the qualification for you. It is, of course, the qualification from the Claims Institute, The Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters.
So how long will it take you to qualify? We estimate that starting out in your career the first two papers would take you between 40 and 60 hours study and the final paper is likely to be around 60 hours. As you can take the papers when you want to you have the control and flexibility to be successful at your pace.
There are three separate sets of learning material to accompany each of the examinations as follows:
- CH1 – Introduction to the Insurance Industry
- CH2 – Claims Handling
- CH3 – Advanced Claims Handling (Handling Claims for Specific Losses)
The Certificate is now recognised on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) at Level 3
Details of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for each of the 3 examinations are available on the Ofqual website as follows:
Introduction to the Insurance Industry
Claims Handling
Handling Claims for Specific Losses
An FAQ is also available:

Material in each of the 3 parts builds upon what has been learned in the earlier parts, and hence it is advised that the courses are taken in order. This is not compulsory but is strongly recommended.
Samples from CH1 are available to view for free:

- Chapter 6 - Utmost Good Faith
- Chapter 8 - The Principles of Insurance - Proximate Cause
Examples of the types of questions that will appear on a CH paper are also available:
