How Do I Qualify?
Certificate and Associateship Qualifications
The Institute offers different levels of qualifications:
- The entry level Certificate qualification is available to any member working in claims and provides a broad introduction to insurance and claims. Successful candidates will be able to use the designatory letters Cert CILA after their name.
Holders of the Cert CII now have an exemption from the first Cert CILA paper CH1.
To apply for this exemption please send a payment of £50, along with proof of your Cert CII qualification, to the Institute. Contact details are available on the contact page.
- The top level ACILA Associate qualification, which confers Chartered status, is the gold standard qualification for loss adjusting, and is available to those working at a loss adjusting practice, firm or company. The equivalent MCILA qualification, which confers Certified status, is available to those not working at a loss adjusting practice, firm or company but whose predominant activity is the investigation, management, quantification, validation and resolution of Property, Casualty or any other losses.
For more information on the different qualification options please see the Route to Qualification - Chartered Status or the Route to Qualification - Certified Status

CILA Ordinary Members and CILA Students
If you are an Ordinary Member or Student preparing for the CILA examinations you will find the information on this page of assistance to you in your studies.
There is a syllabus for each subject of the examinations and this should be your guide on the areas you need to study. All syllabuses can be found in the Examination Handbook.
A Recommended Reading List has been prepared listing books and other publications which it is considered cover the syllabus. However students should appreciate that it is not necessary to read all the contents of every book on the list. You may also be able to identify other material which covers aspects of the syllabus.
Technical Bulletins are issued periodically to all members. Whilst these are not related directly to the examinations they often contain information that may be relevant to a subject you are studying.
